Hello Ferne, we use a similar type of  fishing fly, a Woolly Worm,usually black with a mixed white feather but I have caught salmon on an all white one,thank you,  you have helped me with your photo.
White Woolly Worm,(I think), caterpillar phase of  the Yellow Woolly Bear moth, Spilosoma virginica, a widely distributed member in the Arctiidae family of caterpillars.   http://www.allaboutworms.com/
