At approximately 2:00pm, I was traveling towards the highway on my way back from ptarmigan hunting. We were travelling via ATV, on a registered trail. After coming up over a small hill, I noticed a large, dark brown animal standing on a marsh approximately 100 feet away from me. The animal stood still for a couple seconds, looked at me, then immediately headed away at around my 11 o'clock at a very fast speed. The animal was around 6 feet long, had a long tail which curled up towards it's back as it ran. I turned off my bike and watched attentively. The animal ran straight towards a hill which was covered in short larch and juniper. It stopped for another second or two and looked back at me. The animal then proceeded to run over the hill and go out of sight. I have been hunting Newfoundland for around 30 years. I have seen lynx, coyotes, moose, black bears, mink, otters, and everything else commonly found on the island. I am confident that what I witnessed today was a mountain lion, or eastern cougar. The sheer size of the animal, movement patterns, short dark brown coat and long tail lead me to believe that I saw a cougar. Previously I had heard reports about cougar sightings on the island but dismissed them as folktales. My father and uncle were also present, although they did not see the animal as they were behind me on their atvs. When they arrived, I suggested that we go and look for tracks. On the advice of my uncle however, we left the area for our own safety. I will be reporting this sighting to wildlife and natural resources.
