this pair perched on my son's arm while we were swimming in the pond. i wonder if it is the same species and if they are mating?

The male is in the front. It has claspers on the end of the abdomen that holds the female around the back of the neck. Before the male grabs the female, he transfers sperm to a special organ at the base of the abdomen. When the two are coupled like in the photo, the female will bend her abdomen forward to pick up the sperm. Sometimes the male will hold onto the female until she lays the eggs in the water.
