These two ants are from the same colony as in the previous two observations that I've just posted. What is going on here? Is the winged ant dead? It crawled on to my Styrofoam picnic plate and never dropped its 'cargo' when doing so. These were ID'ed on inaturalist.org as a Myrmica detritinodis worker carrying a dead male.

I've routinely seen ants carrying other ants, and can't tell if they are dead ones or not. I'm wondering if they might be carrying dead ants back to the colony to use as food?
