Bowring park is the only place I have seen them as well. I wonder how widespread they are in Newfoundland? are they as destructive as those pesky Squirrels?

I grew up in Whitbourne, and only ever saw squirrels. Until I saw that one in Bowring Park, I didn't even know that the island had Chipmunks :)

I posted one of Chipmunk. at the Provincial park at Stephenville, that is the first one I saw in NL. Didn't know they existed here. sam

We found one once just outside Butterpot. They were introduced to the island in 1962 at Barachois Pond Provincial Park (that would explain the Stephenvill sighting); in 1964 there was an introduction at Sir Richard Squires Provincial Park and in 1968 an introduction at Butterpot. They haven't persisted beyond those introduction areas, and never in high numbers as they are more suited to deciduous forests and less to boreal. My guess is the one on Bowring was brought there by someone who caught it at Butterpot and realized it woudn't really make a good pet.

It was at Barachois Provincial park that I saw it. Sam I had no information on chipmunks in Nl. before.
