Sighting Info
Observed: June 15, 2014 @ 3:30 PM Posted on: June 24, 2014 @ 12:18 AM (diff: 8 days) Comments: This island, " Green Island", used to be the nesting grounds of Common and Arctic Terns. Also Black legged Kittiwakes. A couple of pairs of Cormorants nested there too. Black Guillemots also nested in the holes in the cliffs. I
When we started going there to look at the nestlings when we were kids, there were about 2 to 3 thousand Terns there, some persons gave the number of 5 to 6 thousand . one had to step very carefully as not to crush eggs and/or chicks. In the eighties a pair of Herring Gulls implanted themselves there and nested. gradually they increased in numbers. about 10 years ago the number of Terns and Gulls were about the same. the gulls gradually took over. when the Garbage dumps were closed in this area the gulls completely took over the island and this year,. ( only made one trip), didn't see one Tern. Damn shame!!!!
