What is this?

By Robert LeBlanc on 8/19/2015 12:22:49 PM

Due to the fact that the lichen is growing on the ground, I would think that it is likely a species of Peltigera.

By Mac Pitcher on 6/8/2016 12:05:07 PM

Definitely a Peltigera (Pelt or Dog Lichens). This is a difficult genus to identify species with certainty without using identification keys. Possibly P. canina (Dog Lichen) or P. rufescens (Field Pelt Lichen). Both are usually found in open situations such as older dry lawns and overgrown gravel roadsides. A number of Peltigera species will occur arboreally, and P. canina can often be found on the lower boles of trees in moss.
